Prospective local Lib Dem MP, Steve Gilbert, took time out of his election campaign last week to give formal evidence to the public inquiry which is considering the appeal by Sita on the decision of the former Cornwall County Council to reject the proposed incinerator in St Dennis.

Steve Gilbert said:

"My view on this has always been clear. Incineration is the wrong technology, one site is the wrong solution and St Dennis is the wrong place. The point I made to the inspector is that Cornwall County Council shouldn't have embarked on these plans without a fully thought through strategy to deal with Cornwall's waste.

"Cornwall Council should be leading the way in making use of new, greener, cheaper technologies. Not living in the dark days and sticking with the easy option when that is also the wrong option for Cornwall."

Steve Gilbert has been a continuous campaigner against the plans, and was instrumental in uncovering Cornwall Councils backroom discussions with SITA earlier this year.
